STEM with Adventure-Based Learning

The STEM program at Camp Wamp is currently providing campers with disabilities hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, all while embracing the outdoor adventure spirit of the camp. This interactive program integrates STEM concepts into the natural environment, making learning fun, engaging, and accessible for all campers.

Current STEM Activities

  1. Engineering Challenges
    • Adaptive Camp Design: Campers are designing and building small-scale models of accessible structures (ramps, bridges, or seating areas).
    • Floating Creations: Teams are building and testing buoyant structures for water-based challenges.
    • Shelter Building: Using physics and engineering concepts, campers are constructing outdoor shelters.
  2. Nature & Environmental Science
    • Ecology Walks: Campers are exploring local plants, animals, and ecosystems.
    • Water Filtration Experiments: Hands-on learning about purifying water using natural materials.
    • Soil and Erosion Studies: Conducting real-time studies on soil composition and conservation.
  3. Astronomy & Space Science
    • Stargazing & Astronomy Night: Campers are using telescopes to observe constellations, planets, and celestial events.
    • Building Solar Ovens: Learning about solar energy by creating ovens that can cook simple food.
  4. Coding & Technology
    • Accessible Robotics: Campers are being introduced to simple robotics with adaptive controls.
    • Nature Sensors: Learning basic coding to create weather or environmental sensors.
  5. Physics of Movement & Sports Science
    • Biomechanics & Adaptive Sports: Exploring how physics applies to wheelchair sports and adaptive climbing.
    • Flight Science: Building and testing paper airplanes, kites, or simple rockets.

Program Goals & Impact

  • Hands-On Learning: Campers are engaging in interactive experiments tailored to different abilities.
  • Problem-Solving & Creativity: Encouraging innovative thinking and making STEM subjects fun.
  • Adaptability & Inclusion: Ensuring all activities are accessible to campers of various mobility levels.
  • Connection to Nature: Using the outdoor setting to make STEM concepts more relatable and engaging.
